To ensure safe and comfortable tours for visitors during the National Day Holiday, the Civility Office of the Kulangsu Administrative Committee recruited 280 volunteers to guide tourists.

Every day from October 1 to October 7, the volunteers offered tour information to tourists at major spots, including Sanqiutian and Neicuo’ao ferry terminals, the Mixed Court, the Trinity Church, the Dragon Hill Cave, and the Xilin Gate. They guided tourists to the planned routes and reminded them to mind the vehicular traffic, thus ensuring tourist safety. A volunteer found that a billboard at the Dragon Hill Cave was unsteady and that the transformer at the entrance to the cave might catch fire. He immediately reported these safety hazards to the officials, who sprang into action to remove them. It’s worth mentioning that Lin Xianxiong, president of ICBC Xiamen, personally headed a team of 25 ICBC volunteers to guide tourists on Kulangsu.

The volunteers worked on the island from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm every day. They gave up their rest days and demonstrated the civility and humanity of Kulangsu through their unselfish dedication and thoughtful service, turning Kulangsu into a home away from home for tourists. In return, they received the smiles and applauses of the tourists.

In the immediate aftermath of Typhoon Meranti, the Civility Office of the Kulangsu Administrative Committee recruited a large number of volunteers for the restoration operations, quickly bringing life on the island back to normal. As of October 7, a total of 1,540 volunteers from the World Heritage Bidding Office, city government agencies, Siming District, and Xiamen Sea Turtles Home worked in the field to restore the island. Their action has demonstrated their sense of community and committee to public service. We applaud them for their enthusiasm and unselfishness.
